“Machine-gun toting riot squads raiding art galleries may not be high on the list of things considered uniquely American, but an Aug. 24 and 25 raid on The Other Side Arts, 1644 Platte St., has left red faces, white walls, and some antipathy for Denver’s boys in blue.
“They were carrying machine guns. It was very organized, very quick,” said Peter Tenger, of neighboring Wine Complements, 1620 Platte St.
According to witness accounts, Denver and Aurora police showed up at the art gallery in Denver’s river front area, at about 10 a.m. Aug. 24, some in riot gear. By the time they left, The Other Side Arts, once decked out in two elaborate murals, was the same drab white used by Denver Public Works to cover graffiti.”

They were there to “clean up the neighborhood,” one officer told Remi Darby, an artist who lives in the building and was headed out for brunch, and they asked about cars parked by the gallery and graffiti on its exterior walls.
